The second suspect in a pair of Bay City cash advance store robberies has forsaken a trial in favor of accepting a plea offer. John W. Yenglin, 19, appeared before Bay County Circuit Judge Harry P. Gill Tuesday and pleaded guilty to one count of armed robbery, a potential life offense. In exchange, prosecutors agreed to dismiss three more counts of the same charge. Yenglin’s codefendant, Matthew S. Anderson, 18, accepted the same plea offer Thursday.

A Mid-Michigan man has taken a plea deal in a cocaine probe that turned up sawed-off shotguns. Antwaun Conway, 20, and his girlfriend Billie Bradley were arrested when the FBI and Bay City Police VIPER Unit searched their home on South Lincoln Street in Bay City in July.

So long as he avoids run-ins with the law for the next couple of years, a Bay City man who drove over another man following a bar brawl won’t have to serve prison time. Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph K. Sheeran on Monday sentenced Scott W. Schley, 31, to two years of probation. Schley in June pleaded no contest to assault with intent to cause harm less than murder, a 15-year felony.

United Way of Bay County short $32,500 for annual Back to School clothes drive

The United Way’s Back to School clothes drive is in danger of not meeting the community’s needs for the first time in the program’s seven-year history. Halfway through the annual distribution, the United Way has only been able to purchase clothes for 700 of the 1,200 kids who qualified for the program this year. At $65 a pop, that equates to a $32,500 shortfall. "We have never seen these kind of numbers before," said Vicki Ribble, community improvement director for United Way. "We just had so many more children than ever. Last year, we had about 800 total."

Bay Metro bus driver Tony Watson drives down Adams Street in downtown Bay City 15 times a week, and almost every time, watches drivers peeking around the corner off Fifth Street. On Friday afternoon, one car went too far and his bus took the impact. "There should be a stop sign (on Adams)," said Watson. "It needs to be a four-way stop." At 2:40 p.m. Friday, a silver Buick Century driven by Rebecca York, 44, of Bangor Township, crossed Adams Street and struck the oncoming bus that had 10 passengers on it at the time, plus Watson. York's vehicle had three children and her grandmother in the passenger seat.
