via MLive

Had extra funds been available to conduct a more thorough investigation, a Pinconning man may not have been acquitted of attempted murder, according to one juror in the man’s recent trial. “What it came down to is there was not enough money to do this investigation,” said the juror in the trial of Stanley “Mike” Milostan. “We could have come up with a different verdict if more money was supplied to deal with this case. Unfortunately, it was not.”

So long as he avoids run-ins with the law for the next couple of years, a Bay City man who drove over another man following a bar brawl won’t have to serve prison time. Bay County Circuit Judge Joseph K. United Way of Bay County short $32,500 for annual Back to School clothes drive

via MLive.com

The United Way’s Back to School clothes drive is in danger of not meeting the community’s needs for the first time in the program’s seven-year history. Halfway through the annual distribution, the United Way has only been able to purchase clothes for 700 of the 1,200 kids who qualified for the program this year. At $65 a pop, that equates to a $32,500 shortfall. "We have never seen these kind of numbers before," said Vicki Ribble, community improvement director for United Way. "We just had so many more children than ever. Last year, we had about 800 total."

"And we have hot water," said Quinn. "It's a work in progress but we have plans to make this place great." Quinn said the hotel averages about one room per night and had about 12 during Pig Gig three weeks ago.

Forbes names Bay City one of top 'recession-resistant' real estate markets

The recession hasn't hit Bay City real estate as hard as other areas around the country, despite higher than normal foreclosure rates. Forbes recently named Bay City as one of 25 "Recession-Resistant Cities for Real Estate" citing rising home values that fly in the face of the 9.9 percent unemployment rate. "These are not places where the economy as a whole is necessarily rebounding; they are places where, regardless of unemployment rates and other economic woes, real estate markets are showing some positive improvement," the article said.
